Our Senior Leaders

Following the merger of Cheshire College – South & West and Macclesfield College, the Leadership Team works across the College’s four campuses, providing strategic leadership and creating the best teaching environment to inspire learners, staff and the wider community.

Meet our leaders

Jasbir Dhesi OBE

Principal/CEO

With more than three decades in further education, I have seen the life-changing impact that learning can have on individuals and communities. Beginning my career as a teacher at Yale College in Wrexham in 1992, I quickly developed a strong belief that education unlocks confidence, ambition and opportunity, which is a principle that continues to shape my leadership today.

Throughout my career, I have held a range of senior leadership roles, becoming Principal and CEO in 2011 and helping to lead the creation of both Coleg Cambria and Cheshire College – South & West. Since joining South Cheshire College in 2014, I have overseen its successful merger with West Cheshire College and am now leading the next exciting chapter as the College prepares to unite with Macclesfield College.

At the heart of my work has always been a commitment to the communities we serve. I believe talent exists everywhere, and our responsibility is to create the opportunities and support that allow people to thrive. Whether helping a young person build confidence, an apprentice launch their career, or an adult embrace a new direction, seeing education transform lives remains my greatest motivation.

I am particularly passionate about technical and vocational education and have been proud to help secure significant investment to strengthen these opportunities, including the establishment of the Cheshire & Warrington Institute of Technology. While leadership is central to my role, I continue to see myself as an educator first, ensuring every strategic decision is driven by improving outcomes and opportunities for students.

Receiving an OBE in 2022 and being awarded a Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Further education in 2025 were tremendous honours, but they also reflected the dedication of the colleagues, partners, and communities I have worked alongside throughout my career. As Cheshire College – South & West and Macclesfield College come together, I look forward to building an even stronger institution that broadens opportunities, strengthens pathways, and enables more people to fulfil their potential through education.

Helen Nellist

Deputy Principal/Deputy CEO

As Deputy Principal and Deputy Chief Executive of Cheshire College – South & West, I bring over 26 years of experience in further education, alongside a decade in industry. Having studied at West Cheshire College myself, I know first-hand the life-changing impact of further education and remain passionate about creating opportunities through apprenticeships, technical education, and strong employer partnerships. Throughout my career, I have focused on building meaningful connections between education and industry. I have led major investment projects to develop industry-standard facilities, innovative learning environments, and technologies that enhance the student experience, while also serving as a qualified Ofsted Inspector and Chair of the West Cheshire and North Wales Chamber of Commerce. Since joining the College, my role has evolved to help shape its strategic direction, working closely with the executive team to ensure we continue to meet the needs of students, employers, and our communities. Strengthening partnerships and ensuring our curriculum equips students with the skills that employers need has been central to that work. What continues to inspire me is seeing the difference that further education makes every day. Whether supporting a young person into their first career, helping an apprentice thrive, or enabling an adult student to achieve a new ambition, creating opportunities for people to fulfil their potential is the most rewarding part of my role.

Ruth Szolkowska

Vice Principal (Innovation, Curriculum & Quality)

As Vice Principal for Innovation, Curriculum and Quality, I bring over 20 years’ experience in further education and 15 years in senior leadership. My career began in quality management with British Telecom before moving into teaching IT, where I discovered a passion for improving education through curriculum development, quality enhancement and learner success. Alongside my leadership roles, I have served as an Ofsted Inspector for more than 13 years, gaining extensive insight into outstanding teaching, learning and educational leadership.

My own educational journey has shaped my passion for further education. After leaving school, I continued my studies through evening classes before progressing to university as a mature student. Experiencing first-hand the opportunities that education can create continues to inspire my work today.

In my current role, I work closely with the executive and senior leadership teams to shape an ambitious curriculum, drive innovation and maintain high standards across the College. Combining strategic leadership with operational expertise, I am focused on ensuring every student is supported to achieve their potential and progress confidently into further study or rewarding careers.

My connection with Cheshire College began when I was part of the 2019 Ofsted inspection team, where I led on Leadership and Management and was struck by the College’s culture, values, and ambition. When the opportunity arose to join the organisation two years later, it was an easy decision. Today, I remain convinced that this is an incredibly kind, supportive and totally transparent college, with a very big heart.

Philip Burrow

Chief Financial Officer

As Chief Financial Officer, I bring more than 30 years of senior leadership experience across accountancy, industry, and international consultancy. A Chartered Accountant, my career has included external audit, risk management, fraud and forensic investigations, alongside finance leadership roles in organisations with turnovers exceeding £100 million. I also spent six years as an overseas Partner with a Big Four accountancy firm in West Africa, supporting governments, businesses, and international development agencies.

Joining the College in October 2024 marked an exciting new chapter and my first experience of working in further education. Although the sector brought a steep learning curve, I quickly recognised that the principles of strong financial leadership remain the same. My focus is on ensuring the College’s financial strength through effective planning, sound financial management, and close collaboration with colleagues to support informed decision-making and strong financial governance.

After many years working in organisations driven by shareholder value, I was drawn to education because of its lasting impact on people and communities. My experience working on international development projects in Africa reinforced the importance of investing in education and opportunity, and I wanted to be part of an organisation whose success is measured by the difference it makes to the lives of its students.

What I enjoy most about my role is working with colleagues who share a genuine commitment to achieving the best outcomes for students. Supporting teams to understand the financial impact of their decisions, while helping create an environment where students can thrive, is incredibly rewarding and reflects the values that inspired me to join the College.

Lynne Rowland

Assistant Principal (Learner Services)

I began my career in financial services as a Financial Adviser before retraining as a business lecturer following the 2009 financial crisis. Teaching BTEC Business and A Level Accounting gave me a strong foundation in curriculum delivery and student support, while completing a Master’s degree in Education Leadership helped to shape my progression into senior leadership.

Since joining Cheshire College – South & West in 2015 as a lecturer, I have progressed through a range of leadership roles, overseeing curriculum areas including Health, Early Years, Access and Teacher Training, while leading key initiatives such as the introduction of T Levels and supported internships. As Director of Higher Technical Education, I expanded higher-level provision before moving into my current role as Assistant Principal for Learner Services, where I focus on ensuring every student has the support that they need to succeed.

I applied to Cheshire College for my first lecturing role at the same time as applying to Macclesfield College and was fortunate to receive offers from both. I chose Cheshire College because of its strong reputation, and the sense of belonging I experienced as soon as I walked through the door. Now, with the Colleges coming together, I have the opportunity to experience both, which feels like a natural and exciting progression.

What I enjoy most about working in further education is seeing the transformation in students over time. Many join us as young people, and it is incredibly rewarding to see their development in confidence, mat

Karen Roberts

Assistant Principal (Apprenticeships and Employer Engagement)

I am Assistant Principal for Apprenticeships, Adult Education, Commercial and Employer Engagement, with over 28 years’ experience in further education. As a practising Ofsted Inspector, I also bring valuable insight into quality, standards and continuous improvement.

I began my career as a lecturer before progressing into senior leadership roles across several Midlands colleges, where I successfully grew their apprenticeship provisions, improved student outcomes and developed employer-led curriculum. Since joining Cheshire College – South & West in 2019, I have expanded our apprenticeship, adult education and commercial offer, secured significant external funding, and led major strategic projects.

I was drawn to Cheshire College by its ambition, strong community focus and commitment to working closely with employers. The opportunity to help shape skills development across the region and create meaningful opportunities for students and businesses continues to inspire me.

What I value most about further education is its ability to transform lives. It is incredibly rewarding to help people realise their potential while strengthening the connection between education and industry.

I joined Cheshire College – South & West as Assistant Principal for Quality in 2022 and have helped lead the College’s successful Ofsted ‘Good’ judgement across all areas.

At Cheshire College, I lead quality assurance, the Self-Assessment Report and Quality Improvement Plan, working with colleagues and governors to embed a culture of high expectations, continuous improvement and outstanding teaching and learning. Supporting staff development and ensuring students receive the best possible experience is at the heart of my role.

I was attracted to the College by its ambitious vision, commitment to excellence and focus on improving outcomes for students. Alex Edmunds

Assistant Principal (Curriculum) Macclesfield Campus Lead

I began my career as an automotive technician before moving into education with a private training provider. Working with a wide range of students, including those with high needs, young offenders, apprentices, and industry professionals, showed me the difference that high-quality teaching, strong relationships, and tailored support can make.

I joined Cheshire College in 2016 as an Automotive Lecturer and have since progressed through a range of leadership roles, including Centre Coordinator, Assistant Director, and Director of Higher Technical Education. Along the way, I helped shape the College’s Institute of Technology facilities and, as Director of the Cheshire and Warrington Institute of Technology, led the consortium to strengthen technical education across the region. These experiences have led me to my current role as Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Campus Lead at Macclesfield Campus.

I originally joined Cheshire College because of its facilities, employer links, and the opportunity to make a greater impact through education. What has inspired me to build my career here is the supportive culture, the trust and freedom to drive meaningful change, and the opportunity to work alongside dedicated colleagues who always put students at the centre of what we do.
