Victory for Cheshire College students at WorldSkills National Finals

Several Cheshire College – South & West students have been ranked amongst the best in the UK, after competing in the National Finals for the WorldSkills Competition.

A global movement of over 80 countries, WorldSkills supports young people across the world through competitions-based training, assessment, and benchmarking. The 2022 National Finals consisted of competitions designed by industry experts, to test the finalists’ knowledge, practical skills, and employability attributes.

Steph McGovern announced the winners in a livestream on Friday 25th November.

Level 3 Food and Beverage Service Supervision student, Leah Castleton, was one of only eight contestants to make it to the National Finals for Restaurant Service in Belfast. A Level student Trinity Woolmer-Greaves won the silver medal for Graphic Design, and Samantha Reid Masters won the gold award for Nail Technician.

Speaking of Samantha’s success, Beauty Lecturer Andrea Rimmer said: “Sammie entered the WorldSkills competition last year and won bronze, but she really wanted gold. Since then, she’s spent hours and hours practicing her nail art whilst working for Marshmallows Hair and Beauty in Ellesmere Port. She’s diligent, she’s dedicated and she’s passionate. She absolutely loves the nail industry, and it obviously shows through her work. We’re really proud of her and what she’s achieved.”

Dr Neil Bentley-Gockman, Chief Executive of WorldSkills UK, was quick to offer his congratulations to all contestants and medal winners, stating: “You are an inspiration to us all and living proof that choosing high-quality technical education and apprenticeships leads to real success in work and life.”

Cheshire College are now accepting applications for September 2023 for those interested in studying a diverse range of subjects, designed to provide students with combined skills and knowledge that will fully prepare them for the next exciting stage of their life.  Visit www.ccsw.ac.uk to find out more.
