The Course

Biology is a rapidly developing science at the forefront of many important developments in society. It is a fascinating subject, studying topics such as advances in cloning, gene technology, drug testing and forensics. Biology looks at the study of life and living organisms. It is a branch of natural science and involves many other disciplines such as chemistry, physics, mathematics, geography and psychology. Qualified biologists have an important role in social, environmental, economic and technological contexts.

The A Level consists of 8 topics:

  • Lifestyle
  • Health and Risk
  • Genes and Health
  • Voice of the Genome
  • Biodiversity and Natural Resources
  • On the Wild Side
  • Immunity, Infection and Forensics
  • Run for your Life and Grey Matter

Why study Biology?
Biology is a rapidly developing science at the forefront of many important developments in society. It is a fascinating subject, studying all traditional advances in cloning, gene technology, drug testing and forensics.

You’ll also find: Highly qualified and committed teachers; our high grades are amongst the best in the country. We also have excellent retention and progression rates.

What else can you do on this course? Field trips include a visit to Anglesey to study seashore life; a trip to Keele University Life Science labs and the opportunity to carry out plenty of other practical work.

Due to the overlap in course content this course is not suitable to be studied alongside AAQ Medical Science.

Typically you will need 5 GCSEs, including two at grade 5/B (or above) and three at grade 4/C (or above) including maths and English. For A Level Biology you will need a grade 6 (or above) in GCSE Biology or grades 6/6 if you studied a double award for science.
Biology is a desirable qualification for a wide range of degree courses. These include Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Horticulture and Ecology. It is also important for paramedical studies such as Nursing, Radiography, Pharmacy, Environmental Health and Medical laboratory work. Many students go into all of these fields or study other subjects that use their biological expertise.

The course fee shown is the co-funded rate which is only available for people living in the local authority areas of Cheshire West and Chester or Cheshire East. If you live outside of these local authorities please contact the College for fee information.
