How to apply

The Course

This IMI Diploma will develop your skills further in the areas of braking, steering and suspension, engine operation and fault diagnosis, transmission systems and fault diagnosis and fault finding techniques in auxiliary systems. It’s an ideal progression route into the motor industry, where trained vehicle technicians are always in demand.

The IMI Technical Certificate is one of the most comprehensive motor vehicle learning programmes available. This internationally recognised qualification provides a standardised approach to the delivery and assessment of the underpinning knowledge requirements of NVQs/SVQs endorsed by the Motor Industry Training Council (MITC). Advanced Level units covered on the Level 3 Diploma include the following:

  • Braking, steering and suspension 
  • Engine operation and fault diagnosis
  • Transmission system and fault diagnosis
  • Auxiliary systems and complete fault finding techniques

Typically you will need 5 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including a 4/3 (C/D) combination for maths and English.
The course will give you what you need to go straight into work or move onto a vehicle maintenance and repair apprenticeship. On completion of this course, technicians working in an automotive engineering environment can apply to become a vehicle tester, after completing a VOSA course.
